Nelson,
Wow -- it’s hard to believe it’s already the end of January!
It feels like 2019 is just getting started and already you and Greenpeace supporters around the world have helped make some incredible things happen.
This month an amazing 105,339 of you signed our petition calling on Canadian supermarkets to ditch plastic packaging. What an achievement! I’m so inspired by this growing movement to stop plastic polluting our oceans and environment.
Last week we had more good news when a US Federal judge scrapped the vast majority of Resolute Forest Products’ baseless CAD$300 million lawsuit against Greenpeace International and Greenpeace USA. This should be a big lesson to corporate bullies — trying to silence their critics with shady legal attacks does not pay off.
And since you can never have too much good news, here are some more stories to inspire you to keep up the good work:

Supreme Court Rules Companies Can’t Abandon Oil and Gas Wells

Great news today from the Supreme Court of Canada! The court overturned an old ruling allowing bankrupt oil companies to abandon their environmental mess. Thousands of oil and gas wells lie abandoned by bankrupt oil companies in Alberta, risking leaks and environmental contamination. The court ruling today means running out of money is no longer an excuse for companies to shirk their responsibilities to the environment. Greenpeace was an intervenor in this Supreme Court case, arguing taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook for cleaning up the oil and gas industry’s mess. The court accepted the majority of the argument we and other intervenors put forward.

Total will not drill in the Amazon Reef in Brazil

At the end of last year, you made history and won against one of the most powerful companies in the world. Total will not drill for oil near the Amazon Reef in Brazil! The Brazilian environmental agency (Ibama) finally denied the license to the company, and you had a crucial role in this historic decision. Less than two years ago, Greenpeace shared the first underwater images of the newly discovered Amazon Reef with the world. Since then over 2 million people called to protect the reef before an oil spill would have damaged it irreversibly. And you won!

China bans new production plants for gas and diesel vehicles

China has banned the construction of new production plants for gas and diesel fueled vehicles. China produces more vehicles than any other country and is responsible for almost a third of global production, so this is a pretty big deal! Gas and diesel vehicles are are a major contributor to climate change and air pollution. That’s why Greenpeace supporters like you are campaigning globally for a shift away from polluting transport to clean energy alternatives.

Amazing Animal of the Month

At our monthly staff meetings I like to share facts about amazing animals from all corners of the natural world. As this is my first newsletter, I thought I’d share one with you too — as a reminder of the amazing creatures we’re all working to protect.
Did you know that jellyfish don't have eyes or ears or brains, but they hunt moving prey?! So cool. Jellyfish have been inhabiting the earth for hundreds of millions of years, since before the dinosaurs, and they've evolved some incredible abilities in that time. Some can make their organs glow in the dark as a form of defence against predators, and some can even clone themselves. The smallest ones are as little as a thimble, and the biggest ones (lion’s mane jellies like the one pictured above) can have tentacles longer than a blue whale -- hundreds of them!

Supporter of the Month

I’d also like to give a special shout-out to one of our volunteers, Brigitte, who this month reached her fundraising goal of $750 to support Greenpeace Canada! Thank you for all your efforts, Brigitte. If you’re inspired and would like to start your own fundraiser for Greenpeace then please sign up here.

Thank you so much for everything you’ve done to make these good news stories a reality, Nelson. Everything Greenpeace does is funded by people like you and these victories are only made possible by millions of people around the world -- including you -- making your voices heard. Thank you.
Stay tuned for more good news stories coming soon.
Christy
Executive Director (Interim), Greenpeace Canada

Make this the month you become a monthly donor to Greenpeace!

This February, we’re launching an ambitious campaign to grow our supporter base by 300 new monthly donors. Greenpeace supporters are a courageous bunch who believe a green and peaceful future is possible. You’re not afraid to stand up to corporations or governments when they harm our planet. And you believe that change is only possible when we work together. To stay independent, we don’t accept funding from corporations or governments. That means Greenpeace is funded by people like you. The cost of a couple of cups of coffee a month (in a reusable mug, naturally) is all we ask for to help keep the planet healthy for generations to come.
