Nestle wants to sell us our own free water!

To: Joseph Raglione
A suggestion from Joseph Raglione.
Nestle should pump water up from the Ocean and remove the Salt and then send the clean water through pipes to large cities. They can charge cities and states for the service and everybody will love them. Otherwise!
Dear Joseph,
The Story of Stuff Project wants to make a film that will spur action against Nestle’s worldwide water exploitation.
We need to raise $20,000 to make our new film a reality. Donate today to make this story go viral until Nestle cleans up its act.

There’s a big fight brewing over water worldwide. From drought-stricken California, to Canada, to Germany and beyond, the Nestle Corporation is one of the key players in a worldwide effort to privatize our water resources. At the World Economic Forum, Nestle’s Chairman of the Board Peter Brabeck directly opposed declaring water a human right, going so far as to call it an “extreme” action.
While Nestle profits off of one of the fundamental components of life, and litters our oceans with plastic packaging, people and at-risk ecosystems pay the price. But the movement to push back against Nestle is just getting started.

With your help, we can protect public resources worldwide from Nestle’s corporate influence.

Currently in California, Nestle is taking millions of gallons of water for bottlingfrom the drought-impacted San Bernardino National Forest in exchange for a ridiculously small $524 annual fee. When we looked into this story further we discovered why the fee is so small: the permit that Nestle is using to extract water from the National Forest expired over 25 years ago!
Over the past several months, we’ve been working with a retired Forest Service scientist to better understand the impact Nestle’s bottling operation is having on the environment. According to this scientist, who has watched Nestle’s actions in San Bernardino for decades, "They’re taking way too much water. That water's hugely important."
This month, our Campaign Director Stiv Wilson traveled to the San Bernardino National Forest with a film crew to get footage of Nestle’s pipeline and bottling operation and to interview Forest Service whistleblowers about this crisis. What’s clear is that Nestle would prefer to avoid a full environmental review of its permit. But with residents of California being asked to conserve water, the pressure is growing on the Forest Service to study the impact of Nestle’s bottling operation.
Over the coming weeks, we plan to produce and release a short video that will expose Nestle’s unethical operations on California’s public lands to millions of viewers. This video will tell a story Nestle doesn’t want the public to know, launching a larger campaign to hold Nestle accountable.

Please contribute today to produce a hard-hitting investigative film to spur public action and put a stop to Nestle.

Now is the time to act. With the drought in California stirring up national media attention, people’s concern about the future of our public water is at an all time high. Nestle takes water from public lands around the world to produce single-use bottled water that costs 300 times as much as tap. With our changing climate, droughts are expected to become a worldwide problem. If we can spread the real story of Nestle far and wide, we can force government and businesses to take action.
Nestle’s operation in the San Bernardino National Forest is just the tip of the iceberg. We’ve already filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to obtain more information about Nestle’s operations on other public lands, and we need resources to keep the pressure on the company until we achieve real change.
And to underline the urgency of this moment, two generous donors have agreed to match the first $10,000 in donations for this project. That means that if you give today, your donation will be doubled!

Together we can turn the tide against Nestle and toward a more sustainable future. Give today and your donation will be matched for two times the impact!

Nestle has immense resources, but we believe public resolve to create a clean and sustainable society is stronger. With Community members like you joining forces with others around the world, we can challenge Nestle to clean up its act.

Are you in?

Tom on the Issues

To: human4us@bell.net

Tom on the IssuesNDP
Dear Friend:
Thank you to all of you who continue to contact my office with your concerns.  I'm always so delighted to see how engaged folks are and how many of you care so deeply about the issues facing our great country.
Unfortunately, I am not able to deal with each and every email, letter and phone call—especially not with the degree of detail and care I'd like to be able to provide in response to each and every one of your queries. So, I'd like to take some time to touch on some of the most common questions folks raise when they take the time to write to me. I hope that I provide you with some insight, otherwise, don't hesitate to get in contact with my office again at any time. I'm always so keen to hear about the things that matter to you.
CREATING A STRONG, DIVERSIFIED ECONOMY
Many of you continue to share with me the difficulties you have making ends meet, or feeling like you just can't get ahead. After a decade ofthis Conservative government so many Canadian families are feeling squeezed and falling further behind.  That's why New Democrats have proposed practical measures to help create good middle class jobs.
- We'll support small businesses, who are the local job creators;
- Kick-start manufacturing;
- Raise the federal minimum wage to $15/hour.
What's more, New Democrats will put the emphasis back on sustainable economic growth. Growth that will help not only today's middle class, but our children and grandchildren.
REDUCING INCOME INEQUALITY AND CHILD POVERTY
In addition to our $15 dollar a day child care plan, a New Democratic government will close a tax loophole wealthy CEOs currently enjoy on stock options and we'll redirect that money to low-income families through an enhanced Working Income Tax Benefit and National Child Benefit Supplement. This will be a dollar for dollar transfer from those who need it the least to those who need it most.  I'm committed to fighting for practical steps like this to lift children out of poverty and directly help working families struggling to get by in this weak economy.
THE NDP PLAN FOR SENIORS
New Democrats believe that all Canadian seniors deserve to live and age with dignity. That's why we've developed a National Strategy on Aging that includes:
Strong public services—we'll ensure that our institutions and vital public services are strong, accessible and prepared to meet the needs of our aging population.
Healthy seniors—the NDP will make sure seniors have timely and convenient access to health care, we'll increase affordable access to safe and effective prescription medications and we will improve access to home-care and affordable long-term care.
Financial Security—we've committed to restoring the age of eligibility for Old Age Security (OAS) and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) to 65.
Want more details? You can check out the full plan here: http://xfer.ndp.ca/2014/aging-strategy/AgingStrategy-EN-PRINT.PDF
HEALTHY FAMILIES
A free, universal, portable, public healthcare system is still our most cherished public institution. We remain dedicated to delivering a system that ensures every Canadian has access to the care they need—regardless of where they live or their ability to pay.
We also want to ensure that you can get access to the medicine you need. That's why we have a plan to expand public coverage for prescription drugs.  Canada is the only developed country with universal health insurance coverage that does not also offer universal prescription drug benefits—leaving Canadians to face a patchwork of public and private plan coverage.  And the costs are only going up. That's why we need a coordinated approach to lower costs.
Here's our plan for healthy families:http://www.ndp.ca/health
TAKING CARE OF THE OUTDOORS
While the Conservatives ignore the environment, muzzle our scientists and weaken our environmental protections, our natural world suffers. We've all seen the effects of climate change and experienced wild, unpredictable weather—it really demonstrates the urgency with which we have to address this issue.  Canada has to clean up its act!
Because I used to be a provincial environment minister, I am acutely aware of the importance of protecting the outdoors. And, as a grandfather who worries about the future of his grandkids, I am determined to leave a healthy planet to the next generation. My first act as Prime Minister will be to attend a major international climate change conference in Paris to put Canada on track to be a world leader in addressing climate change. What's more, I'll set science-based targets—and actually meet them!
TAKING CARE OF OUR COASTAL AREAS
Many folks are concerned about the fuel spill off BC's coast and what that means for our beautiful coastal areas. The Conservative government has to do more to improve Canada`s ability to respond to spills in the marine environment.  We're dedicated to protecting our coastlines and continue to call on the Conservatives to act:
More importantly, we've committed to reopening Coast Guard and Marine Communications Service Centres closed by the Conservatives. You can join our call by signing our petition:http://www.ndp.ca/bc-coast-guard
SENATE SCANDAL
So many of you have written to tell me that you've had enough of Liberal and Conservative Senators—like Mike Duffy—using public money for their own personal or political gain. We agree! We've long called for the abolition of this unelected, unaccountable institution.  Sign on to our campaign to abolish the Senate here:http://petition.ndp.ca/senate-hall-of-shame
CONCERNS ABOUT CANADA'S INVOLVEMENT IN IRAQ AND SYRIA
I find it very disturbing that Stephen Harper is further implicating Canada into a wider and wider conflict without any accountability. We went from an "advise and assist” deployment, to a conflict where Canadian troops are on the front lines exchanging fire with ISIL. What's more, this isn't even a UN or NATO mission. I think it's clear: Canada has no place in this war.

KEEP IN TOUCH
If I didn't get a chance to touch on one of the issues that's most important to you I hope to do so in further updates. As always, I'd love to hear more of your ideas and concerns.  For my part, I'll be sure to update you regularly on the things I'm working on—such as how the Conservative budget gave more tax breaks for the rich but no real help for middle-class families. I'll keep speaking out on the things that matter to you.
Thanks for reading. Thanks for your interest!
All the best,
Tom

Global warming is becoming global burning!

Hello Gentle People:

Separating the average person from his or her car is not a pleasant job! People love their cars!

Global burning however is not giving us a choice and if we don't change soon we will all be facing a life time of extreme weather patterns. Very unpleasant and often dangerous weather patterns! How warm is it getting?  The Columbia Glacier has retreated Twelve miles.

The CBC is in danger from the TPP!

CBC‏

CBC

To: Joseph Raglione

Leaked documents show our CBC will be unrecognizable -- even sold off to private interests -- if the TPP deal passes.

We have a plan to stop TPP-supporter Stephen Harper from destroying the CBC. Can you chip in CA$1 to save the CBC?
Joseph,
Documents were just leaked from the top-secret Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations -- and the news is bad for our CBC. If the TPP passes, it could be required to operate entirely for profit. And worse -- this move could force the CBC to be privatized.
The mission of the CBC is to tell the bilingual and multicultural story of Canada – but if we let this deal go through, the CBC’s only goal will be corporate profit.
Canadian politicians are extremely vulnerable to public pressure right now as they head into one of the longest election campaigns in Canadian history -- let’s make sure our CBC is protected and not sold off for profit.Harper has been busy making cuts to the CBC and other crown corporations for years, and honestly, we’ve had enough. These institutions represent part of the fabric of the country, and we need to defend them now from the TPP.
Stephen Harper was gunning to agree to the extreme TPP deal in secret talks held just last week in Hawaii -- and importantly, before the election was announced so he wouldn’t have to answer to voters on the campaign trail.
But the talks broke down -- in part because of the work of the SumOfUs community. Public opposition is growing by the day so Harper is doubling down to pass the TPP quickly.
We have no idea if this is in the text of the deal at this point -- the whole deal is being negotiated entirely in secret -- but we can’t afford to wait and find out if Harper tries to unilaterally rubber stamp the TPP deal.
We have a plan to make sure Harper doesn’t facilitate a corporate takeover of the CBC during this election campaign, but we need your help to make it happen.
The TPP deal, in addition to putting our CBC in danger, will further corporatize Canada andput the environment, food safety standards and access to medicine at huge risk.
Harper called the election a whole month early -- because he thinks money is all it takes to hold on to power. Conservative MPs spent the days before the writ dropped on a corporate spending spree -- literally spending $4 billion to help secure votes.
Trade deals like the TPP will mean that we won't have a publicly-funded national broadcaster free from corporate influence -- something we desperately need.
That's the point of the CBC: to provide a tonic to Americanized corporate channels, and ensure that Canadian writers, actors, producers and broadcasters have a place to grow and develop a national consciousness. The CBC used to excel at this and even now, crippled by successive funding cuts, it punches far above its weight.
SumOfUs members have been fighting for the CBC and against the TPP for years. Just last week, over 30,000 of us signed a petition calling for Harper to save the CBC and scrap the TPP. And with the coming election, now is our chance to say loud and clear that we don't want a Canada without a fully funded public broadcaster. That means no to the TPP and no programming shilled out to private interests.

Will you chip in CA$1 to stop the TPP and save our CBC??Chip in CA$1 now to save the CBC from a corporate takeover.
Thanks for all you do,
Angus, Emma and the rest of the us at SumOfUs Canada Society

FREE TRADE DEALS MORE OFTEN BENEFIT THE RICH AND HURT THE POOR!

"Many activists in Puerto Rico are calling for debt forgiveness. Others are more visceral, saying the hedge fund millionaires who caused so much of the mess can shove it.

Martha Quiñones Dominguez, an economics professor at the University of Puerto Rico, says what's needed is an independent audit to see which creditors' claims are valid and which aren't. The island needs to raise taxes on corporations and the rich, she said, as well as invest in sustainable development to cut down on dependency and imports.

While corporate powers are pursuing another mammoth trade deal in the Pacific, similar trade regimes have bankrupted another economy in the Caribbean.

As for the hedge funds plotting against Puerto Rican workers and families, these are the same forces pushing austerity and privatization on the U.S. mainland. If they succeed in Puerto Rico, they will be more powerful than they already are — and more dangerous."

Gentle People:

Place your money on life sustaining and nature enhancing systems and remove your money from polluting non sustainable industrial economic systems. It won't be long before you are living in a Green paradise. Even giant Box stores can be life sustaining during Winter months when they provide shelter for thousands of people. These buildings can greatly improve their value by creating Greenhouse gardens on their roofs and sound-free quiet spaces that allow shoppers a few minutes to relax away from the incessant and horrible mind numbing noise currently infecting these buildings. Better late than never! A message from the White House.

 THE WHITE HOUSE

Our biggest step yet in fighting climate change:
President Obama just announced America's Clean Power Plan -- the biggest and most important step our country has taken in the fight against climate change.
Our power plants are responsible for about a third of America's carbon pollution -- more than our cars, airplanes, and homes combined -- and that pollution is fueling climate change. But until now, there have never been federal limits on how much carbon pollution existing power plants can generate.
The Clean Power Plan sets the first-ever carbon pollution standards for these power plants, while providing states and utilities with the flexibility they need to meet those standards.
Watch this video on the Clean Power Plan.
You've heard the numbers by now: 2014 was the planet's warmest year on record. Fourteen out of the 15 warmest years on record fell within the first 15 years of this century. Earth's current levels of carbon dioxide, which heats up our atmosphere, are the highest they've been in 800,000 years.
We can see the effects of the changing climate in our everyday lives. Our summers are hotter. Our droughts are deeper. Our wildfire seasons are lasting longer. Our storms are more severe. And these disasters are becoming more frequent, more expensive, and more dangerous.
But as the President said today, "There is such a thing as being too late when it comes to climate change."
That's why he directed the Environmental Protection Agency in 2013 to tackle the issue of carbon pollution from our power plants -- and today's plan sets the first-ever nationwide limits on this pollution.
Learn more about the Clean Power Plan.
By 2030, this new plan will reduce carbon pollution from our power plants by 32 percent from 2005 levels. In total, it will keep 870 million tons of carbon dioxide pollution out of the atmosphere -- the equivalent of taking 166 million cars off the road, or cutting every ounce of emissions due to electricity from 108 million American homes.
Because of this plan and other steps we've taken to combat climate change, we'll reduce premature deaths from power plant emissions by nearly 90 percent by 2030, and we'll see 90,000 fewer asthma attacks among our children each year.
Combined with more investments in clean energy, smarter investments in energy efficiency, and a global climate agreement by the end of this year, we can slow -- and maybe eventually stop -- the harm we've inflicted on our climate over the past century.

A VICTORY FOR LIONS AND TIGERS AND ELEPHANTS.

A victory for lions‏

A victory for lions

To: Joseph Raglione

SumOfUs just won a victory to protect lions and other endangered animals. And it all started with a petition.
Now, you can start your own petition too! Create a petition at SumOfUs -- and if it goes well, it could be sent to the whole SumOfUs community!
Dear Joseph,
Delta Airlines just contacted SumOfUs to announce that it will officially ban the shipment of all lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo trophies worldwide as freight. This is all because of people power -- 250,000 SumOfUs members called on Delta to ban the transport of 'trophies' on flights, and within days Delta announced a ban!
It's some good news after Cecil the Lion's tragic death. With airlines refusing to profit from the transport of illegal trophies, hunters will struggle to transport their prizes home and might never go on these trips in the first place.
These wins are a huge deal for lions and our most precious endangered animals. But there are thousands of other companies who need to do what's right -- if only we made them.
Now, starting your own petition against any corporation is easy with SumOfUs Community. And if it takes off, it could be sent to millions of SumOfUs members.
With SumOfUs Community, now you can start a petition just like the one that got some of the biggest airlines in the world to do the right thing. Moroccan soccer player Abdeslam Ouaddou started a petition calling on Barcelona Soccer to drop Qatar Airlines as their sponsor because of worker abuse, and tens of thousands have already signed the petition. The petition has gotten major media coverage. And a few hours after Delta contacted SumOfUs, the New York Times and other major newspapers have already contacted us to cover the campaign.
The fight against corporate power has always been one of many fronts and many faces -- more fronts than one organization could handle. But now, we are giving you the tools tolaunch your very own campaign on the issues you care about most.
From the very beginning we’ve believed in the strength of numbers (you can see proof of that in our name). So far we have focused our attention on critical issues: bringing attention to the plight of workers in Bangladesh working in sweatshop conditions, helping persuade massive fast food chains like McDonald’s to adopt more responsible palm oil sourcing policies, and protecting thousands of bunnies from being tortured in the cruel fur industry. With you at the helm, and other SumOfUs members all over the world starting campaigns to challenge corporate power, who knows what we will accomplish.
Just sign in and start a campaign. Recruit your friends. Grow the community. It’s that easy. Really.
We’ll be right here lending you support every step of the way.

Thanks for all that you do to make this movement real,
Paul, and the rest of the team at SumOfUs.org

SumOfUs is a worldwide movement of people like you, working together to hold corporations accountable for their actions and forge a new, sustainable path for our global economy. Please help keep SumOfUs strong by chipping in CA$3 .
Have a great idea for a SumOfUs campaign? Start your own petition and the best ones could be emailed to the whole SumOfUs community.

=================================

Congratulations! That is one great victory! Keep up the great work and I will keep publicizing your "SumOfUs" around the world. It would be great if you could unite with GreenPeace and a few other international non-profits. Tell Annie Leonard I sent you. She is the director of GreenPeace U.S.A. and she started small with a project known as "The Story Of Stuff." Pay the site a visit as the information is important.
