Captain Paul Watson‘s message is pretty clear, “If the oceans die, we die.” To the average person, this might sound alarming but at the same time comforting, as most of us assume that the world’s oceans are vast, endless bastions of marine life, so large that the human species couldn’t possibly harm them. We’re all susceptible to this idea, but unfortunately, it couldn’t be farther from the truth.

In reality, scientists have predicted that the world’s fisheries could collapse as soon as 2048, due to our rampant appetite for seafood. We’re already starting to see signs that the oceans are dying – from the alarming rate of species extinction, imbalanced ecosystems, mass-scale coral bleaching, and the epidemic of marine dead zones. The oceans might be large, but the reach of human influence is equally so.

Having grown up in a small Canadian fishing village, Watson has seen the impact of overfishing first hand. He’s watched species that were once abundant disappear into far off memories and his work in marine conservation has only revealed the true, global devastation that’s being wrought on the oceans. The desire to get people to “wake up” and understand how our lives are intrinsically connected to the billions of other species we share the planet with – particularly the highly overlooked marine species – drove Watson to become involved as one of the founding members ofGreenpeace. From there, he founded Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, (where he still serves as President and CEO), and has spent decadesstanding in front of whalers, confronting marine poachers, and being an outspoken advocate for living in accordance with the laws of ecology.

Few people understand what humans are doing to the oceans, and thusly the planet, better than Paul Watson and he shared his insight in a recent episode of #EatForThePlanet with Nil Zacharias.

During their conversation, Nil and Watson dive deep into the state of the oceans and discuss the impact our eating habits have on them, specifically touching on how farming on land as well as overfishing has impacted fragile marine ecosystems, and whether or not seafood can ever truly be sustainable.

For someone who has been fighting for the environment for most of his life, Watson does not claim to be hopeful about the future. In fact, he jokes that the world will be quite a nice place once all of the humans are gone – but that’s not to say that he has any intention of giving up his life’s work anytime soon. Watson believes that we all have the tremendous potential to make a positive change in the world and all it takes is courage, passion, and imagination to solve some of the most “impossible” problems.

Major Investing Firm Exec Says Meat Industry Should Focus on Lab-Grown Meat to Stay Competitive

More bad news for the animal agriculture industry! Foodnavigator reports that the CEO of a London-based investment banking firm that provides advice to growth-focused companies, Aquaa Partners, Paul Cuatrecasas thinks that lab-grown meat is a big threat to the animal agriculture industry.

Specifically, Cuatrecasas believes that the companies that grow animal feed that will face the greatest burden from lab-grown meat. “Executives at feed companies need to take this risk seriously,” Cuatrecasas says. “Even if they do not believe this future will actually come to pass, they need to admit it is feasible.” The investment banker believes there is increasing evidence that the future of food will be animal-free and he says it’s just a question of when not if.

Companies like Memphis Meats and Supermeat are setting out to create meat – without slaughtering a single animal, but as we shared just last month, food technology company Hampton Creek, makers of “Just Mayo” have entered the clean meat game, promising lab-grown meat to hit shelves just next year.

Memphis Meats has already succeeded at producing a lab-cultured meatball and chicken nugget, but they estimate it will take another four years until they’re ready to sell a product commercially. Given the speed at which Hampton Creek plans to get their product to market, this could be a major game changer for the clean meat sector.

And it seems like Cuatercasas thinks so too, believing that Hampton Creek is going to set off a chain reaction for other companies to bring their products to market as soon as possible. Cuatercasas believes that lab grown meat will make up a significant portion of people’s diets within just 10 to 15 years and urges animal feed companies to stay relevant.

“Faced with the choice between two types of meats: one that is cheaper, cleaner, and more environmentally friendly, and the other—which is not. I cannot see traditional meat winning out long term,” Cuatrecasas says. Lab grown meat uses 99 percent less land, emits 96 percent fewer greenhouse gases, consumes 96 percent less water and uses 45 percent less energy,according to a joint study by the Universities of Oxford and Amsterdam.

Considering that The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that livestock production is responsible for 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions while other organizations like the Worldwatch Institute have estimated it could be as much as 51 percent, lab-grown meat offers a practical solution. Nearly one billion people suffering from hunger across the globe and as the population continues to mount to 9.7 billion by 2050, we simply won’t be able to sustain more people eating a diet high in animal products.

The question of how we’re going to meet the protein needs of the planet is rapidly becoming the biggest challenge of our time. It’s no secret that the developed world is obsessed with protein, with the average person in the U.S. consuming 103 grams per day, around double the actual recommended amount, two-thirds of which comes from animal sources. Naturally, the first step to building a more sustainable food system starts with consumers eating less meat and dairy – but there is a large percent of the population that will likely never give up their bacon cheeseburgers, which is where lab grown, or cultured meat can fill in the gaps.

The world's longest‐running military occupation and genocide is still on going, and it is taking place right now in West Papua, Indonesia. This area is home the world's second-largest rainforest and a civilization that dates back 50,000 years. But now the West Papuan people and their lands are all in danger of becoming extinct.

We cannot sit back and watch this happen any longer. We must speak up! Sign the petition now.

More than 500,000 people have already been killed in the West Papua genocide, and there's no sign the pace will slow down. Already this month, more than 135 people — including 79 children and youths — have been arrested for peaceful protests. The Indonesian police tortured many of them. Last year alone, the Indonesian police rounded up more than 8,000 children and adults illegally.

The Free West Papua Campaign has started a Care2 petition demanding that the UN intervene immediately, before more lives are senselessly lost. Thousands of people from West Papua have literally risked their lives to sign it, in the hopes that their voice will reach the UN.

In just a few weeks, dedicated human rights supporters are going to swim 69 kilometers across Lake Geneva to bring this petition straight to the United Nations headquarters. Let's make sure that when they arrive in Geneva, they have the support of tens of thousands of people from around the world!

Don't let the world close its eyes to this horror. Demand an end to the occupation and genocide now!

I can’t believe it’s finally happening.

Tomorrow, the Supreme Court of Canada will rule on whether Inuit were properly consulted about an oil exploration project that threatens their Arctic home. This ruling will be the culmination of more than three years of legal action for the Inuit community of Clyde River, Nunavut.

With the Supreme Court ruling due to be released tomorrow, I wanted to send a special note of thanks to all Greenpeace supporters for everything you’ve done to support Clyde River over the past three years.

440,000+ of you have signed the petition to the federal government demanding that it stands up for Indigenous rights and stops seismic blasting. 
More than 4,170 of you donated a total of over $123,000 toward the extensive legal costs for Clyde River’s Supreme Court case and to help solarize the community. 
Hundreds of you gathered outside the Supreme Court in Ottawa in one of the biggest demonstrations the court has ever seen. 
And many of you from around the world have shared photos of solidarity with the community – as well as sending food packages and messages of solidarity.

And that’s just some of what you’ve done! The support you’ve shown for this tiny community that decided to stand up for their rights and for our shared planet has been truly inspiring.

The ruling for the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation – who are contesting the approval of the Line 9 tar sands pipeline in their territory – will be announced at the same time as the ruling for Clyde River.

Tomorrow, the court could decide to stand on the right side of history and support Indigenous communities demanding their right to protect their home.

Or it could side with companies and governments that want to exploit the lands and waters that Indigenous Peoples have stewarded for millennia.

Whatever the outcome, I know that both communities can count on all of us for our continued support.
