The United Nations must uphold the Declaration of Human Rights in the Punjabi region.

A law passed in Pakistan this March that will make it easier for victims of domestic violence to come forward. But not everyone is happy about it. The Council of Islamic Ideology, an extreme group that consults for the government has introduced a bill that would allow men to “lightly beat” their wives. In the past, the Pakistani government has listened to this group on family matters. Add your name here to urge the Punjab government to ignore their bill before any more women are abused with no route to recourse.
The CII’s bill states that men should be allowed to beat their wives if they “act out.” If for example, a wife shows too much skin, she can be beaten. Or, if she refuses sex, she can be beaten. This horrifying bill that advocates for the allowance of physical abuse is clearly in reaction to heightened women’s rights in the country.
The CII has tried to gain control over financial and political decisions, with little success. They have, however, had more success in the family sphere. For example, the legal marriage age in Pakistan is 16. Some groups wanted to increase it to 18, until the CII weighed in and the age stayed at 16. They have been lobbying for the legal marriage age to move to 12 for boys and 9 for girls for years.
It’s not altogether unsurprising that a group of religious zealots who wants to sanction child marriage also believes it is in their purview to control whether or not domestic violence is acceptable. The scary part of all of this is that t...more

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CONTINUES TO FIGHT INJUSTICE!

THANK YOU FOR TAKING ACTION TO FREE HOMA HOODFAR!

Amnesty International Canada also needs your help to urge authorities in Iran to free prisoner of conscience, Bahareh Hedayat.
Iran has tried to silence activist Bahareh Hedayat by sentencing her to 10 years in Iran's notorious Evin Prison. Her crime? Bahareh was arrested for encouraging the participation of women in student groups, promoting gender equality in the law, supporting political reform and opposing human rights violations. She is a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for the peaceful expression of her political beliefs.

One of the most disgusting things I have ever seen!

Simon says to fight cruelty at Yulin.

Help end the dog meat trade.
Dear Friend,

Right now, thousands of dogs and cats in China need our help. Over the past few days these poor animals—many of them stolen pets—have been crammed onto trucks in wire cages without food or water, and driven for hours under miserable conditions. Their appalling fate? To be cruelly beaten, then slaughtered and eaten as part of an annual 'festival' held in Yulin.

It's so brutal, it makes me sick thinking about it. The cruelty, pain and terror these animals experience is disgusting and there are no words to describe how upset this makes me feel.

But we are the only hope for these poor animals. Together we must stand strong with the millions of people across China who, just like us, love animals and passionately oppose this cruelty.

Please join my friends at Humane Society International and their wonderful Chinese partner groups in the fight against this cruelty with an urgent donation today » They can't do it without our support.

As I write to you, HSI operatives are on the ground in Yulin and they have already rescued 54 dogs and cats from certain death at slaughterhouses, in addition to the hundreds of dogs they've helped rescue from slaughter trucks prior to the festival. These lucky animals are being given emergency veterinary care and driven to safety, but many more need our help.

The images and footage of the gruesome reality for these helpless animals—many of them still wearing their pet collars—are outrageous and inexcusable. We have to do something. Please donate to help HSI fight the dog meat trade and care for these rescued animals »

$45 - pays for food and bedding for rescued dogs and cats

$65 - buys crates and fuel to get animals out of Yulin and on the road to a safe sanctuary

$130 - covers life-saving veterinary treatment for sick and injured animals

You may have read recent news reports of Yulin dog meat traders trying to claim that business is still good—but HSI’s Peter Li is on the ground there now reporting that a number of the dog slaughterhouses are closed, and that live animal markets and dog meat restaurants are much reduced compared to last year. This is encouraging news.

Achieving lasting change takes time, but I am hopeful that together we can see an end to this horrific trade. And I am heartened by a Chinese opinion poll just released that shows the majority of Chinese people want the Yulin festival shut down, and in fact most people in China have never eaten dog in their lives.

The HSI team and their brave Chinese partners are making real progress—but they can't continue to fight without your help. Please help stop this cruelty with an urgent gift »

These animals can't help themselves—it's up to us to do something, now.

Sincerely,

Simon Cowell

The Sum of Us Movement needs funds to fight Monsanto, Bayer and BASF.

Emma Pullman, SumOfUs.org us@sumofus.org

May 16
to Joseph
Monsanto may be on the verge of merging with two of the world's largest producers of bee-killing pesticides, Bayer and BASF -- creating a massive and devastating corporate bee-killer.
Will you chip in to help stop it?
Joseph,
Monsanto is working on a merger with the world's largest manufacturer of bee-killing pesticides, Bayer. It wants to take over Bayer and BASF, massively increasing the danger to already-threatened bees.
This mega-merger would make Monsanto the biggest seed company AND the biggest pesticide company in the world -- giving it a near-monopoly over worldwide agricultural production from beginning to end.
Each time we’ve fought back against these dangerous mergers. and successfully stopped its merger with Syngenta. Monsanto is desperate to expand its business -- so we need to launch an all-out fight now to stop this merger before it's too late.
Will you chip in CA$1 to stop the Monsanto mega-merger?
Monsanto is desperate to expand after its merger with Syngenta fell through.
The merger Monsanto is discussing would create by far the biggest pesticide company the world has ever seen. And at the centre of their corporate agribusiness model is the indiscriminate, widespread use of pesticides linked to the massive global bee die-off.
Together, we were able to help stop the Syngenta-Monsanto merger because we showed that a corporation that big would have monopolistic power over farmers and the entire agriculture industry.
This new merger being discussed with Monsanto, Bayer and BASF would be just as bad, if not worse.
With your help, we'll continue our efforts to block any merger that would allow Monsanto to become part of a bee-killing monopoly -- including our vital shareholder work to hold agrichemical giants to account, our work supporting legal suits to save the bees, and much more.
Once a merger like this goes through, it's often impossible to undo the damage -- we need to act now to nip this merger talk in the bud.
Will you chip in CA$1 to to block the creation of this massive corporate bee-killer?
Yes, I'll chip in CA$1 to stop the Monsanto, Bayer, BASF mega-merger.
Thanks for all you do,
Emma, Jon and the team at SumOfUs
